Food Bank

Food Bank - A network of Food Banks

In 2010, the population under the poverty line reached 1.26 millions, indicating that poverty worsened in Hong Kong. The working poor reached 0.4 million, accounting for 46% of the poor. Soaring food prices became added burdens for poor families. HKCSS reported that the average food expense per meal for a poor family is $25. Some of our clients even spend as low as $10 - $20 per meal for a 3 to 4 member family. To make sure that the poor are adequately fed, we need to give them food.

Jubilee Ministries, The Hong Kong Industrial Evangelistic Fellowship, The Urban Peacemaker Evangelistic Fellowship, and Mission to New Arrivals banded together to mobilize churches in Hong Kong to set up mini food banks to serve the poor and needy in their community. Through this, we also hope to start a city-wide movement to care for the poor. Right now, 46 churches have set up their own food banks to serve the community.

Food Bank - Jubilee Ministries

Jubilee Ministries helped 8 churches set up food banks to serve the poor and needy in their community. We also have our own food bank at Mongkok to render food assistance to the poor.

Short-term food assistance :

We interview applicants to understand their family and financial background. Upon ascertaining that they are qualified for assistance, we provide them free food for 6 weeks to 3 months.  So far, all those who seek help are female.

Emotional care and family assistance :

The poor not only encounter financial difficulties, but also problems associated with poverty: family members are violent, addicted to alcohol, gambling and drugs. Therefore, apart from caring for their physical needs, we also care for their psycho-emotional needs.  We listen to their stories, provide counselling or ministry through prayer.

Interest classes:
According to their needs, we also hold interest classes such as praise dance, cooking, arts and craft. Meanwhile, we hold outdoor activities such as carnivals and outings to relief their stress and strengthen relations with each other.

Group Nurture:
We also run nurturing group for those who have come to Christ to further strengthen their faith.
