Hawkers
Ministry
Origin
This ministry started
in 2002 when Jubilee’s seminary students practised what they learnt by
doing personal evangelism among a group of hawkers. Starting from 2006,
some hawkers showed willingness to believe in God. In October the same
year, a regular Hawker Ministry was established in Mongkok.

Characteristics
of Hawkers
Since they simply cannot leave their stalls, hawkers have no time to cater for
their own needs. They eat fast food all the time. Long working hours result
in poor relationship with family members.
Strategies
of the Ministry
- Each year, we hold 40 day fast
to pray for this group of people. We do prayer-walk around the hawker areas.
Through worshipping God on the streets, we prepare the soil for the seed of
the Gospel.
- We listen to God’s voice in our
prayers to ascertain the proper strategies and methods of outreach.
- We patronize the hawkers and
make friends with them to establish a relationship of trust.
- We give out soup to them every
week. During special feast days, we pass out gift packages to bless them.
- We help them clean their stalls
and tidy up goods as an effort to be incarnational.
- We organize various evangelistic
events for them, like winter-solstice celebration, mobile Christmas carnival,
free blood pressure check-ups and hand massage.
Results
of the Ministry
- 20 hawkers have trusted in Jesus
and two of them have been baptized.
- 70 friends/family members of the
hawkers have become Christian
- A total of 56 people took part
in the Chinese New Year Celebration 2008.
- On Easter Day in 2008, we organized
a Parade for Jesus. On that day, 5 worship teams worshipped Lord at the same
time at 5 different locations. We raised large flags that read “Jesus is Lord”
and paraded round the wet market.
